Degus (day-GOOS) are small South American herbivores related to chinchillas and guinea pigs, with a typical life span of 3-5 years. While they are not as interactive as rats, they are curious, social and friendly little critters, and a pure pleasure to have around. They are not difficult to care for, but do have needs specific to their species, (dust bath, yes! sugar, no!) - and they are champion chewers. If you've never owned one, please do some homework and ask plenty of questions to be sure they are the right pet for you.
